ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Arequipa

Arequipa is located at an altitude of 2,325 meters in the desert mountains of the Andes. This beautiful city was built almost entirely from sillar, a type of white volcanic stone. For this reason, Arequipa is known as “The White City.”

With approximately one million inhabitants, Arequipa is the second largest city in Peru. Its main tourist attraction is the Plaza de Armas, considered one of the most beautiful in the country. The Cathedral is magnificent, and the commercial galleries around the square feature a beautiful colonial style.

How to Get to the Colca Canyon

The Colca Canyon is located about 4 hours from the city of Arequipa. The best way to get there is by taking an organized tour or trek, which typically includes round-trip transportation from Arequipa.

What Places Will We Visit During the 1-Day Colca Tour?

During the tour, you can visit different points of interest in the Colca Valley and Canyon, including natural viewpoints, traditional villages, and impressive Andean landscapes.

What is the best time to visit the Colca Valley?

You can visit the Colca all year round. However, the best time is between April and May, when the rainy season is ending. During this period, the agricultural terraces of the valley are greener and the landscapes become even more impressive.

What is the difference between a Valley and a Canyon?

A canyon is a deep and narrow river valley, formed mainly by the action of a fast-flowing river that carries rocks and sediments over time, carving out the terrain.

A valley, on the other hand, is a wider and relatively flat area located between mountains, formed by water erosion descending from the mountains. Valleys are often very attractive places due to their natural beauty and unique landscapes.

At what altitude is the Colca Valley located?

The main town in the Colca Valley is located at approximately 3,635 meters above sea level.

During the journey between Arequipa and Chivay, we pass through a very high point called Patapampa, also known as the Volcanoes Viewpoint, located at approximately 4,900 meters altitude. This is the highest point on the route during the tour.

What other tour alternatives can I do in the Colca Valley?

To visit the Colca Valley, you can choose between different types of experiences:

Conventional Tours
There are 1 or 2-day tours, where you can appreciate the agricultural terraces of the valley and visit the main viewpoint in the region, the Cruz del Cóndor.

Experiential Tourism
In this type of experience, you get a closer look at the daily life of local communities, their traditions, customs, and typical cuisine. This usually takes place in the towns of Coporaque, Sibayo, and Yanque.

Trekking in Colca
For nature and hiking enthusiasts, there are 2 or 3-day trails within the canyon, ideal for those with good physical condition who want to explore the spectacular landscapes of the Colca Canyon.
